23rd January - Pauls birthday bash at the Drift

Enjoyed a great night out with my friends in the Drift Japanese restaurant in Rossland. There were a few sore heads the next day!

Wednesday 21st January - Xcountry skiing at Nancy Greene

What a great day out!

I've never been Xcountry skiing before, so when I was invited to go to Nancy Greene summit (about a 20 minute drive from Rossland), I decided to give it a go.

Many thanks to Kim for arranging the trip and for all the tips that she gave me.......plus not laughing too much when I fell down a tree well.

I quickly discovered that Xcountry skiing is nothing like downhill skiing, I seemed to be okay going on the flats or uphill, however going downhill or turning is something that I have a long way to go in mastering. Headplants and falls backwards and sideways were very frequent for me! But what fun we all had. Thanks to Sam and Michael for the photos.

Tuesday - Its a fun day at the top

I was expecting the weather to change today, however it was fog at the base and sunshine at the top again. The Red Mountain groomer operators are doing an amazing job of keeping the runs in shape, they are groomed to perfection! The slopes were even quieter than Monday, I skied with Peter and Hugh on Ruby Tuesday and Sothern Belle which had no one else on it.......perfect!

Monday 19th January - Its a bit foggy!

Visability at the base of Red was a little foggy, however at the top of the mountain the sun was out and it was a glorious day!

End of the Revelstoke trip

Stopped for a meal at Castlegar on the way back to Rossland.

What a great trip, thanks Mark!

Last day at Revelstoke and the sun is out

Great views today from the top of the Stoke chair at 7300 feet. The top of Mount Mackenzie is 8058 feet. Mark took us on a bit of an adventure into North Bowl, I was glad that the sun was out and I could actually see clearly!

I also bumped into a very good friend of mine , John Dowson, who I hadn't seen for 5 years at the bottom of Stoke chair, the world is such a small place! He was visiting Revelstoke for 2 days and had just arrived. I hope to see him in Banff mid March as we have a lot of catching up to do. What a coincidence!!

Tuesday & Wednesday, legs are getting tired

The groomers at Revelstoke are long, very long!! They are also very steep with cat tracks that zig zag across them. High speed large radius turns are great fun, with the opportunity for taking air where the tracks cross. Mark practiced his 360's off these and actually landed one....................... unfortunately I was in charge of the camera and missed the shot completly.

Totally un crowded, most of the runs we had to ourselves.

Revestoke Resort

Revelstoke has 5620 vertical feet , the longest lift-serviced vertical descent in North America. It is the only resort in the world to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry from one resort base. Unfortunately it is still in the process of completing the building work at the base lodge. The toilets are a bit basic!! However the skiing is amazing.

Monday skiing at Revelstoke

After a superb breakfast, we set off to Revelstoke ski resort (15 minute car ride). Whilst on our first ski run, we met up with Bill, an ex Red resort skier, who showed us what the mountain had to offer. It didn't take long for us to get our bearings.

Arrived at Revelstoke

Arrived at Revelstoke. We stayed at the Court House Inn, which (not surprisingly) is opposite the Court House. This was a great place to stay, a couple of blocks from Revelstoke centre, and it does great breakfasts!!!

Ferry over Arrow Lake on route to Revelstoke

Boarded the ferry for a 20 minute journey across Arrow Lake. Very cold, there was ice on the lake!
